stage 2 and stage 3...

In this first picture, I primarily worked on the hair (darkened darks, lightened lights and then used a transparent wash of yellow ochre over all the hair), and I mixed a medium grey for the shadow areas on the face and white for the highlights and used some watered down crimson for the "red" areas on the face... I then used a light grey wash over all the face.

In the second picture, I used various strength pink washes from Titanium White and Crimson for the socks, sweater and low-lights in the pillow, a light wash of cobalt on the jeans... I darkened in the eye area with the blue, (just for shape) and did a couple of light washes with a flesh tone made from cadium yellow, raw sienna, crimson and white on the face.

Portrait of an artist's daughter....
I've started a new painting... a portrait of the kid. It'll be 16x20 and I am doing it in acrylic (yeah, acrylic). I started the underpainting (below) this weekend, using Liquitex Basics in raw and burnt sienna, and Windsor and Newton Galeria's Titanium White (so, translation: these company's cheapest grade paints) very thinly, very much like watercolor.... We'll see how it goes.

More flamingoes
I really need to get in gear and finish this project... I've got several 'starts' of flamingoes and penguins but, nothing complete. I am determined to have them done and framed by Monday! For Christmas, I got my regular supply of brushes from my brother and some extra goodies... a couple of products which I have never tried before! One is Windsor and Newton Blending Medium for watercolor and the other is, (also W&N), Texture Medium for watercolor! I've never used anything but WATER and paint for watercolor, so I am excited to try these...

post holiday
Time to get back to work... literally 'back to the drawing board'! I am currenly working on a commission of two separate paintings. Both paintings will be of birds; one penguin and one flamingo and both will be in watercolor. Knowing nada about either birds, I started out looking around the internet for information. I've concentrated first on the penguin... who knew there were SO MANY different kinds of penguins? (well, apparently someone because there are several extensive websites out there about them). King Penguin, Emperor Penguin, Chinstrap Penguin etc...This is a funky bird!
